about

Taipei-born violinist and performance artist Sarah Chou performs across classical, contemporary, experimental music and free improvisation. Her practice centres on dialogue between Western classical music and other cultural and artistic disciplines. Drawing from speech inflections and musical heritage of Taiwan’s native languages, she treats sound as pure energy capable of language-like communication and connection, reflected in the chant-like melodies and raw acoustic textures.

Integrating physical movement into her practice, Chou performs as a "moving musician" across physical theatre, dance, and performance art. She treats sound, body, and space as interrelated mediums that function like musical counterpoint, with each autonomous voice remaining distinct yet interweaving to form a “cross-media” performance practice.

In contemporary classical music, Chou has performed with ensembles including Studio Acht, the Asian Composer’s League (ACL), and the TNUA New Music Workshop. Expanding into performance art, her interdisciplinary creations include hey Bach, I’ll be back in a Beat and co-created works at the Taipei Fringe Festival. Her performance credits also include Crippled Symmetries at Yu-Hsiu Museum of Art, multiple projects at Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB), Dance Festival Malta, alongside numerous art festivals, creative platforms, and free improvisation sessions.

Chou began studying violin outside the traditional music system before entering Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) in Violin Performance, later transferring to graduate with a degree in Music Theory & Composition. During her music studies, she engaged extensively with coursework in the New Media Arts and Dance departments, establishing a singular perspective on performance art across instrumental playing, composition, and diverse disciplines. She continues her research and performance of classical and contemporary music while developing new forms of performance practice.
